Alden Ehrenreich Confirmed as Han Solo in ‘Star Wars’ Spin-off
Alden Ehrenreich has been unveiled as the new Han Solo in Disney’s Star Wars spin-off. In May, it was reported the Hail Caesar! star had landed one of the most sought-after parts in the industry – apparently beating stars including Taron Egerton and Jack Reynor – and on Sunday, the news was confirmed as Ehrenreich appeared onstage alongside Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega at the Star Wars Celebration Europe event in London.
“You’re the new Han Solo, damn,” Boyega commented to Ehrenreich. Ehrenreich will step into the role previously made famous by Harrison Ford in Disney’s standalone movie, about the life of the hero before he first made his appearance in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The movie is being developed by filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for a scheduled 2018 release, and production is expected to begin in January after a previous delay. According to Variety, the reason for the later start to filming could be so that Ehrenreich’s Solo can be introduced in a cameo role in another of Disney’s upcoming spin-offs – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Ford recently reprised his role as Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which became a blockbuster hit following its release last December, but he wanted no involvement in the casting process or any aspects of the spin-off production. During a press conference in London in December, Ford admitted he was happy to pass on the baton: “I’m glad that somebody else is going to have the burden of being young. It’s well beyond my understanding or control and I want nothing to do with it, in the nicest possible way. I know it will be well done… it’s nothing to do with me.”
