‘Amy’ Director Asif Kapadia Tackling Diego Maradona Documentary
Asif Kapadia, the man behind Oscars Best Documentary favorite Amy, is set to tackle a new film about controversial Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona. The filmmaker, who also tackled the Senna documentary about tragic Brazilian Formula 1 hero Ayrton Senna, will be working closely with Maradona’s estate on the new film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Announcing his plans to take on the sportsman’s life on Friday, Kapadia said, “I was taken by his character, his genius, honesty, passion, humor and vulnerability. I was fascinated by his journey, wherever he went there were moments of incredible brilliance and drama, he was a leader, taking his teams to the very top, but also many lows in his career.” The film will reportedly focus on Maradona’s time with Napoli in Italy throughout the late 1980s, when he was considered one of the best players in the world. Kapadia’s documentary about Amy Winehouse is a frontrunner to pick up an Academy Award next month.
