On Wednesday morning, police were called to the University of California, Los Angeles campus in response to an active shooter.

The campus was put on lockdown for several hours as police contained the situation. They were able to confirm that the incident was a murder-suicide with casualties of two men. Their identities and relationship to each other were unknown, but now the gunman’s identity has been revealed, as well as his motive.

Mainak Sarkar, the gunman, killed 39-year-old engineering professor and father of two, William Klug, according to CBS.

Authorities searched Sarkar’s Minnesota home where they found a “kill list” with Klug’s name, the name of another UCLA professor, and a woman. However, when police arrived at the woman’s home in Minnesota, they found her shot dead. The other professor, who was not on campus that day, is all right.

Sarkar, a former doctoral student, reportedly drove from his home in Minnesota to Los Angeles with two guns in order to kill the two professors.

According to KTLA News, authorities do not yet know the relationship of Sarkar to the woman. However, Sarkar did have altercations with Klug.

Charlie Beck, chief of police at the Los Angeles Police Department, said Sarkar seemed to be angry over intellectual property that he thought the professor released to harm him.

According to KTLA, Sarkar wrote a blog post bashing Klug.

“William Klug, UCLA professor is not the kind of person when you think of a professor. He is a very sick person. I urge every new student coming to UCLA to stay away from this guy,” he wrote. “He made me really sick. Your enemy is my enemy. But your friend can do a lot more harm. Be careful about whom you trust.”

CBS reports that Sarkar is listed on the UCLA website as part of a research group that was run by Klug.

Authorities are now looking for the car Sarkar drove from his home to L.A. which is a 2003 Nissan Sentra, license plate 720KTW.
