Carly Simon Reveals Who ‘You’re So Vain’ Is Actually About
Singer and songwriter Carly Simon has finally lifted the lid on the subject of her “You’re So Vain” hit, confirming part of the song is about former lover Warren Beatty. The musician has long teased fans about who she was referring to in the 1972 release, but she has never revealed the identity of her vain ex until now.
Simon told People magazine she was indeed talking about Beatty in the track’s second verse, in which she sings, “You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive/Well you said that we made such a pretty pair and that you would never leave/But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me…” “I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren,” said the 70-year-old, who addresses the mystery in her upcoming memoir, Boys in the Trees. “Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!” However, Simon has decided to keep devotees guessing about the rest of the tune, which actually details her relationships with two other men. Asked if she will ever provide fans with answers to the remaining mystery, she added, “I don’t think so, at least until they know it’s about them.” Simon’s admission emerges five years after she dismissed speculation her classic track was about gay record label boss David Geffen, amid claims she can be heard whispering his name in an acoustic version of “You’re So Vain” on her 2010 album, Never Been Gone. Simon laughed off the rumors, insisting she hadn’t even met her former boss when she wrote the track in 1971. “What a riot!” she told Showbiz411.com in an email at the time. “Nothing to do with David Geffen! What a funny mistake! Someone got a clue mistaken for another mistake! How can this guessing game stop without a lie?” The singer is known for her high-profile romances during her youth. She was famously married to James Taylor, and also dated the likes of Cat Stevens, Kris Kristofferson, Jack Nicholson and Mick Jagger.
