Fans Walk Out of Amy Schumer Show as Comedy Turns Political
Comedienne Amy Schumer faced a chorus of boos and a mass walk-out during a Sunday night show in Tampa, FL as she tackled gun laws and the upcoming presidential election. An estimated 200 people reportedly left the gig at the Amalie Arena because they didn’t find the Trainwreck star’s jokes about Donald Trump and other hot button topics very funny.
The Tampa Bay Times reports the protests began shortly after Schumer called Republican presidential candidate Trump an “orange, sexual-assaulting, fake-college-starting monster.” During the heckling she also invited a Trump supporter to join her on stage. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly on Monday, the comedienne said, “I loved the crowd and my show in Tampa last night! I want to thank the 8,400 people who stayed. We had a great time! “We have always depended on comedians to make us laugh and tell the truth. I am proud to continue that tradition.” Schumer poked fun at Tampa and the people that live there in her book The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, which was released earlier this year, calling the city “horrendous” and joking, “I’m not scared about writing that, because I know for a fact that no one who lives there has ever read a book.” Meanwhile, Schumer became a big gun law advocate last year after two fans were shot and killed while watching a screening of her film Trainwreck in a Louisiana cinema. The comedienne got serious and joined her cousin, Senator Chuck Schumer, to campaign for gun control reform.
