Harrison Ford Jokes About Plane Landing Controversy
Harrison Ford made light of his recent plane landing mishap as he made a surprise appearance at the Star Wars celebration event in Orlando, Florida on Thursday. The veteran joined franchise creator George Lucas, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and his co-stars Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, and Peter Mayhew at the fan convention, where he helped to reflect on the legacy of the sci-fi movies over the last four decades.
During a panel discussion, moderator and actor Warwick Davis joked about Ford’s unannounced cameo as he poked fun at the actor for accidentally landing on a taxiway instead of a runway at a California airport in February. “I can’t believe we managed to keep it a secret considering you landed your plane on Interstate 4,” Davis quipped. Smiling at the light-hearted jab, Ford responded, “It was a good landing.” The 74-year-old also gave the audience a laugh at his own expense after Lucas recalled why he cast Ford as Han Solo in the original Star Wars release, 1977’s A New Hope, explaining the film was about “spaceships and flying,” adding that the actor was a real-life aviator. Right on cue, Ford remarked, “Fly? Yes. Land? No,” prompting a hearty laugh from the crowd as he quoted a famous line from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the third movie in his other big franchise with Lucas. The actor’s Star Wars Celebration appearance occurred days after it emerged Ford would not face punishment from officials at the Federal Aviation Administration over the landing incident, which took place at John Wayne Airport in Orange County on February 13, when the star flew his single-engine Husky in just above an American Airlines plane, which was set for take-off with 110 passengers and six crew members on board. The aircraft was able to depart safely moments later. In a leaked transcript of his conversation with air-traffic controllers, Ford acknowledged his stupid mistake, telling them: “I’m the schmuck who landed on the taxiway.”
