We’ve seen this kind of dog neglecting before, and fortunately this story too has a happy ending.

Penny, an adorable yet infected puppy, was nearly 4-months-old when she was found in the woods by a stranger. She was abandoned by her previous owner and brought to the veterinarian’s office where Imgur user AlexBoBalex works.

And after some necessary treatment, along with tender love and care, Alex adopted Penny. Her journey from homeless to home will hit you right in the feels.

When Penny was found, she was covered in mites, had scabbed skin and was unable to move from the pain.

She ate and slept a lot. Penny received the proper medication which helped her stand again. She soon began walking around and eventually her fur grew back.

“She started to act like a puppy!” wrote Alex. “…and she wasn’t nakey anymore!”

Once Penny was released from the hospital, Alex and her boyfriend adopted her and gave her a collar and tag — which was a tad too big for the little one.

Now, Penny is healthy and happy, and enjoys going hiking with her new owners.

“She’s come such a long way and her old life is a distant memory,” said Alex. “We reassure her every day that she’s loved and will never go hungry again. Only a few scars remain, and she doesn’t seem to care. She’s living the spoiled life that she deserves!”

Alex advises those wanting a pet to adopt because — as seen in Penny’s Story on Imgur — it is quite rewarding.

Each year, about 7.6 million rescue animals enter shelters nationwide. However, 2.7 million are euthanized according to the ASPCA. So, adopt animals like Penny that were just dealt a bad hand and give them the loving, nurturing home they need and deserve.
