Jeff Goldblum Talks First-Time Fatherhood at 63
Entertainment| | By Sara Wilkins
Jeff Goldblum is enjoying being a father for the first time at the ripe old age of 63. The Independence Day: Resurgence star explained in a new interview with Parade magazine that he was never in the right place to have children before, despite being married twice prior to wedding his third wife.
Goldblum, who was married to actress Patricia Gaul and his The Fly co-star Geena Davis, revealed he only thought about starting a family when he met his current spouse, Olympic gymnast Emilie Livingston. “I never seriously considered it until Emilie,” the 63-year-old actor said of the 33-year-old. “I’m at a different place now. I was enthusiastic to marry her and try to have a baby.” The couple welcomed son Charlie Ocean in 2015, and Goldblum shares he and Emilie were only trying for a month before they found out about their impending arrival the day before their wedding back in November 2014. And his firstborn son ended up with a rather timely birthday. “The day before our wedding, Emilie found out she was pregnant and told me. Charlie was born on Independence Day, July 4, while we were shooting Independence Day: Resurgence in Albuquerque,” he laughed. The Jurassic Park star also explained the meaning of his son’s name, revealing they gave him the middle name Ocean simply because they like the sea. His first name, however, has more of a family meaning. “My dad had a younger brother, my uncle Chuckie, whom he adored. Charlie is a form of Chuckie. My uncle was my exact height, looked like me. Chuckie died in his 20s as a pilot in World War II,” Goldblum explained. Earlier this week, the Oscar-nominated actor gushed about his 11-month-old son at a screening for the 20th anniversary edition release of Independence Day. “We just flew back today from (Washington) D.C. to New York, and he was on my lap the whole time,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “We all went together, and he was sitting on me saying ‘Dada’ for the first time. He kept saying ‘Dada!'” “I adore being a dad,” he added. “It’s fantastic.”
