“I was their 2nd choice for Usual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards,” the actor quips in a humorous statement. “I think my career is definitely going in the right direction. Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down.”

Two-time Oscar winner Spacey is no stranger to the Tony Awards — he was named Best Featured Actor in a Play in 1991 for his role in Lost in Yonkers, and he was also nominated for 1999’s The Iceman Cometh.

Nominations for the Tony Awards will be announced on May 2.

Previous hosts include Neil Patrick Harris, Hugh Jackman, and James Corden.
