Kim Kardashian Blasts Wall Street Journal Over Armenia Ad
Kim Kardashian has slammed editors at the Wall Street Journal for running an ad denying the Armenian genocide. Bosses at the newspaper recently published the FactCheckArmenia ad, which links to a website carrying a statement denying the genocide under the heading, “False: The events of 1915 constitute a clear-cut genocide against the Armenian people.”
Kardashian, who is of Armenian descent, visited her family’s homeland last year, and recently commemorated the 101st anniversary of the tragedy on social media. While U.S. officials do not officially recognize the tragic event as genocide, Kardashian insists it is absurd to feature an advertisement dismissing it. “For the Wall Street Journal to publish something like this is reckless, upsetting and dangerous,” she wrote on her website on Wednesday. “It’s one thing when a s**tty tabloid profits from a made-up scandal, but for a trusted publication like WSJ to profit from genocide – it’s shameful and unacceptable.” Executives at the publication have defended their decision to print the ad, insisting it does not reflect their viewpoints. However, the 35-year-old feels it was disrespectful. “We accept a wide range of advertisements, including those with provocative viewpoints,” a representative from the publication told Gawker. “While we review ad copy for issues of taste, the varied and divergent views expressed belong to the advertisers.” “Advocating the denial of a genocide by the country responsible for it – that’s not publishing a ‘provocative viewpoint’, that’s spreading lies,” Kardashian continued. “It’s totally morally irresponsible and, most of all, it’s dangerous. If this had been an ad denying the Holocaust, or pushing some 9/11 conspiracy theory, would it have made it to print?” “We must talk about it until it is recognized by our government because when we deny our past, we endanger our future,” she added. “When we allow ourselves to be silenced by money, by fear and by power, we teach our children that truth is irrelevant.” The Armenian genocide was the systematic extermination of between 600,000 and 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, which is modern-day Turkey.
