Neil Young Almost Recorded With Nirvana Stars

Neil Young almost formed a studio supergroup with Nirvana stars Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

Butch Vig, the producer of Nirvana’s iconic Nevermind album, has revealed he set up a session for the trio after Young showed interest in working with Grohl while the Foo Fighters star was directing his documentary Sound City, about the Sound City studios in California.

“Dave Grohl was inviting people into jam in the studio and we had set up a session for Krist and Dave from Nirvana to play with Neil Young,” Vig tells The Daily Beast. “It would have been f**king awesome. And I know if Neil Young played with them he’d go, ‘Oh, let’s go on tour and play some shows together!’ It would be like (Young’s band) Crazy Horse on steroids. But then it didn’t happen. Neil Young had a book coming out so he was on a book tour, and Dave had to go interview him somewhere else. It’s a bummer, man.”
