Nicole Kidman Sobbed As West End Show Closed
Nicole Kidman has vowed to return to the London stage after breaking down in tears as her West End show came to a close. The Hollywood actress won rave reviews for her portrayal of DNA pioneer Rosalind Franklin in new play Photograph 51, and she ended her two-month run on Saturday.
Just a day later, Kidman was honored for her achievements by winning the Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress at the Evening Standard Theater Awards in London on Sunday. Speaking backstage at the show, Kidman revealed she burst into tears when the final curtain came down on Photograph 51, and she has asked director Michael Grandage to find her another project. “I have just loved it so much, that connection with an audience and I’m going to miss it,” she told the London Evening Standard. “I was sobbing on Saturday night at the curtain call. I’ve said to Michael ‘Don’t make me wait another 17 years.'” Nicole’s role in Photograph 51 came 17 years after her last stint on the West End stage in David Hare’s The Blue Room, and in her award acceptance speech, she dedicated her Best Actress trophy to her late father. “I did this (play) because my father died a year ago and he was a scientist,” she told the audience. “I did this for him, every night before I went on stage I would kneel in front of his photograph and he would give me the strength to go on stage every night.”
