Prospect Park Zoo Welcomes New Big-Eared Foxes

In case you didn’t hear, there are some new – and adorable – attractions on display at one New York City zoo.

Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo unveiled last week two fennec foxes as part of its wildlife exhibit.

Fennec foxes are the smallest fox species in the world. Adults typically weigh less than four pounds and grow to just nine to 16 inches in length. Their most distinctive feature – the pointy ears – can grow to an astonishing six inches long, the Associated Press reported.

As the Brooklyn Daily Eagle wrote:

“In addition to aiding in their ability to hear prey even when it is underground, they use their ears to help regulate body temperature by dispersing heat.”

Like many fox species, fennec foxes are nocturnal. They are native to Northern Africa.

The Wildlife Conservation Society transferred the little male foxes from the famous Bronx Zoo to the Prospect Park Zoo, and will be located in the zoo’s Hall of Animals.
