Sarah Michelle Gellar Teases ‘Buffy’ Comeback
Sarah Michelle Gellar has teased the possibility of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
The 39-year-old shot to fame when she starred as hero Buffy Summers in the hit U.S. TV series, and while speaking at an event on Friday, she revealed the show could follow in the footsteps of a spate of recent TV show reboots.
“You never know!” she teased the crowd at the #BlogHer16 exposition in Los Angeles. “Hold on – you never know… but that being said, the point of Buffy, what was so special about it was, it was a metaphor of the horrors of high school.”
“The monsters were literally the manifestation of the horrors of that time. That’s a very specific story. I don’t know what that story is now.”
“The whole idea of Buffy giving her power at the end – what you can follow and what (producers) could reboot is any of those young slayers coming today,” she continued. “Bullies were a literal bully when Buffy was growing up. Now bullies hide behind a screen. Buffy would have to be told by someone of that age.”
The mother-of-two sported darker hair at the event, and confirmed her new style was for another reboot she’s involved in – the Cruel Intentions TV series.
Gellar played Kathryn Merteuil in the hit 1999 teen drama about rich kids in New York City involved in a sensational sex scandal. The movie also starred Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, who played Merteuil’s half brother Sebastian Valmont.
The upcoming TV adaptation will be set 15 years after the film, and the plot will center around the corrupt world of Bash Casey, Sebastian’s son, after he discovers his late father’s private diary.
“Yes, my hair is darker because of Cruel Intentions,” she told the crowd on Friday. “Look for an announcement probably in the next month and a half. The road is taking a little longer than normal. We have to do it right. It’s a naughty show and we have to pay homage to what it is.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired from 1997 to 2003, and came to an end after seven seasons and 144 episodes.
