Sean Penn Promised El Chapo ‘Rolling Stone’ Article Would Never be Published if He Didn’t Like It
Sean Penn promised Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman his 10,000-word article for Rolling Stone magazine would never see the light of day if the fugitive didn’t approve it. The actor turned journalist after landing a secret meeting with the crime boss at his jungle hide-out in Mexico in October, and spent seven hours interviewing El Chapo for a planned expose, which was first published online last weekend, shortly after the escaped criminal was recaptured.
During an interview with 60 Minutes, which aired on Sunday night, Penn revealed the article took three months to appear – because he needed to get his subject’s approval after writing it. “What was brokered for me to have the interview with El Chapo was that I would finish the article, send it to him, and if he said no, then that was no harm no foul to any… It would never be printed,” the Oscar winner said.
