Sofia Vergara Consoles Miss Colombia After Miss Universe Controversy
Sofia Vergara has offered her support to Miss Colombia after she was incorrectly crowned Miss Universe at the 2015 beauty pageant on Sunday night. Event host Steve Harvey hit headlines after declaring Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo had won the Las Vegas competition, only to return to the Planet Hollywood stage moments later to confess he had made a mistake.
“Folks I have to apologize…,” he said on live TV. “The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines.” Ariadna remained poised and professional as she had the crown removed from her head and given to Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines, and she later tried to remain positive about the huge embarrassment. “Everything happens for a reason,” the 21-year-old insisted as she wiped away tears in a video interview posted on the Miss Universe Facebook page. “So I’m happy. I’m happy for all of what I did for becoming this… I’m so happy. Thank you for all. Thank you for voting for me.” Fans flooded Arevalo’s social media pages to show their support and among those offering their condolences was Modern Family star Vergara, who shared a photo of her fellow countrywoman’s fleeting crowning moment on Instagram.
