‘Straight Outta Compton’ Star Makes Dig at Oscars Snub
Straight Outta Compton star Jason Mitchell slyly called out the film’s Oscars snubs while accepting a prize at the MTV Movie Awards on Saturday night. The N.W.A. biopic was famously missing from the shortlist of nominees at the 2016 Academy Awards, prompting fans and critics to start the #OscarsSoWhite social media movement – which noted the lack of diversity at this year’s award show.
And at the annual MTV ceremony, which aired in America on Sunday night, most of the cast was on hand to accept the trophy for Best True Story, handed to them by Compton native Kendrick Lamar. After thanking the founding N.W.A. members, Mitchell, who portrayed late rapper Eazy-E in the film, told the crowd, “I’ve got to hold it down for a second, for real. I would just like to take a moment to thank the Academy,” before his co-star O’Shea Jackson quickly whispered in Mitchell’s ear that he was accepting a prize from MTV voters, not members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who are responsible for the Oscars. “I mean, MTV,” Mitchell said. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. My bad, my bad, my bad.” In addition to the film’s actors, original N.W.A. member DJ Yella also took the stage to accept the prize, just a day after he and his fellow rap icons were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday. Meanwhile, actor/rapper Will Smith was also honored at the MTV Movie Awards, as he was given the special Generation Prize by Queen Latifah and Halle Berry. Ironically, the Concussion actor and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith famously boycotted this year’s Oscars due to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, and Berry praised her friend for being a “champion for diversity.” She said, “Will is blazing a path for actors by showing that someone of any color can play any role and open any movie and can win every award and can be the biggest freakin’ movie star in the whole world.”
