John Oliver, along with the rest of the world, is sick and tired of mass shootings. Early Sunday morning, America was hit with another mass shooting that claimed the lives of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
In an emotional message before his Sunday-night comedy show Last Week Tonight, Oliver took a moment to address the tragedy.
“Right now, this just hurts,” he said through red eyes and a shaky voice. “The worst thing is, this pain is so familiar,” he continued.
Oliver goes on to note the similarities between attacks, noting terrorists seem to target places that are full of life and culture.
“In Orlando early this morning a gunman attacked a Latin night at a gay club in the theme park capital of the world, and for the record, I will happily embrace a Latin night at a gay club in the theme park capital of the world as the ultimate symbol of what is truly wonderful about America,” he said.
He then went on to show Florida’s resilience and the hundreds of people waiting on line to donate blood.
“It kind of reminds you that that terrorist dipsh*t is vastly outnumbered,” he said.
However, Oliver also noted that it’s “hard to know what to do in the wake of an event like this,” and apologized for the “jangley” music that will ensue and seems “jarringly inappropriate,” but perhaps sometimes a little comedy is just what we need.
