Amy Craton isn’t your average 94-year-old woman, or your average college graduate.
The Hawaiian resident recently returned to college — FIVE decades later — and finally earned the bachelor’s degree she’s longed for all her life, and with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Plus, this inspiring grandmother got her diploma hand-delivered by the president of the school. She took classes online.
In 1962, Craton, originally from Massachusetts, had to drop out of college to take up a full-time job to support her four children. In November 2016, she revisited that dream and, many online classes later, graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and English.
“It feels good to finish that part of my life,” Craton told Inside Edition. “I couldn’t see just sitting there watching Netflix all the time.”
And although Craton is confined to a wheelchair and couldn’t make it to the commencement ceremony, the president brought her the diploma this past Monday, January 16, and surprised her with a graduation party too!
“You have to learn as long as you can learn,” Amy Craton told Inside Edition. “I feel that I’m still on the road. I have more to learn.”
The new graduate is passionate about haikus and wants to write a children’s book — she even plans on pursuing her master’s degree next.
