Billy Joel Invites Kevin Spacey Onstage for ‘New York’ Duet
Kevin Spacey showed off his musical talents on Friday night as he joined Billy Joel onstage to perform “New York State of Mind.”
The rock icon was playing his monthly residency gig at the Big Apple’s famed Madison Square Garden venue, when he invited actor Spacey to team up for a duet midway through a rendition of his 1976 classic.
After a brief introduction, the House of Cards star appeared onstage to tackle the song’s second verse, with Joel backing him up on piano, before trading lines for the rest of the track.
Spacey celebrated the occasion by snapping a quick selfie of the two old pals, which he posted on Twitter on Saturday and captioned: “On stage at MSG… Singing w/ Billy Joel… Amazing NY fans… All of them together & a selfie?! NY State of Outta My Mind.”

The surprise collaboration marked the pair’s second public performance together — Spacey previously played “Piano Man” with Joel in 2014, when he was honored with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by officials at America’s Library of Congress.
Joel also used Friday’s show to pay a quick tribute to fellow musician J. Geils, the leader of The J. Geils Band, who died on April 11, by performing a snippet of the group’s hit “Centerfold.”
