When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. That’s exactly what one 25-year-old did after calling off her wedding.

Jenny Ly was supposed to marry her on-and-off boyfriend of five years this August. However, after some rough patches in their relationship, she decided it would be best to call off the wedding and break up with her boyfriend.

“It got to a point where we were constantly bickering,” Ly shared with the Today show. “Other things going on in our lives did not work well with the issues we already had…People say once you get married, those issues only get worse.”

She continued, “We no longer knew how to love each other as we should.”

Ly gave back the rings and took over the payments for the wedding, however some of the things that the couple had planned were non-refundable.

“I was locked in a contract for the venue and had to pay for it anyway,” she explained. “I began thinking about other things I could do…Everyone was saying just throw a huge party, but I wanted something good to come out of it.”

While attending a Relay for Life event the next week, Ly thought of what she could do with the venue. She then got in touch with Relay for Life and asked them about hosting a fundraiser.

Both Relay for Life and the venue were super helpful with Ly’s event. The venue even let her postpone the date to later in the month to help accommodate her guests. The venue also bumped up her package allowing more people to come.

The event, which they named “Lemons to Lemonade,” was a huge hit. Five different comedians performed; there was a DJ, and a giant pasta buffet. All of the money went to help the American Cancer Society.

Ly even got creative with the drink names calling them “Lemons to Lemonrita” and “Jenny’s Blackout.”

“I wanted it to be light and fun,” said Ly. “There’s no point in dwelling on the bad. We can all do a little bit of something to make things better for others and ourselves.”

Ly sure was able to turn lemons into lemonade. The event raised a total of $3,203.
