For Spencer and Whitney Blake starting a family wasn’t an easy task.

After the couple was diagnosed with “unexplained infertility,” they decided to adopt two wonderful boys. The couple has been sharing their story about starting a family, highlighting their struggle with infertility and the adoption process on their website.

Most recently, the couple poked fun at the pregnancy announcements that dominate their social media feeds by having their own “infertility photoshoot.”

“We were cracking ourselves up as we brainstormed in the car; it ended up being a really fun project for us to bring to life,” the couple shared.

They explained that humor helps make light of the heavy topic. They also hope that their own journey can help inspire others who share a similar struggle and path.

“We’re glad that it seems like mostly the reaction has been positive, and that many people who struggle with infertility have been able to relate to them in some way,” the couple shared with Distractify. “Sharing anything personal like that can make you a little vulnerable, but getting comments like, ‘Thank you for bringing a little humor to a very difficult issue’ makes us glad we did it.”

Now, they are thankful for what they went through and how that brought them to their boys.

“Infertility led me to my boys. Those mischievous, curly-haired, curious, sweet, little fire-engine-loving boys who are currently sound asleep cuddled up with their stuffed monkey and stuffed alligator respectively,” Blake shared with Distractify. “I can’t think about life without infertility, because what if that would have meant life without them? Infertility is part of what created our family and it is definitely one of the significant things that makes me… me.”

The couple also shared a piece of advice for anyone who is currently going through a similar situation.

“Just the simplest acknowledgement that what we were going through was hard was so appreciated,” they explained. “We were always so grateful when someone took the time to let us know they cared.”
