This Dad Found a Way to Beat the System and Send His 5 Children to College for Free

With college tuition fees reaching ungodly new heights, one dad has managed to beat the system.

For the last 15 years, Fred Vautour worked scrubbing toilets and cleaning mirrors as an overnight janitor at Boston College. While the job may not sound glorious, it sure served a greater purpose. Since Vautour was an employee of the school, he was able to send his children to the university for free as long as they were accepted.

Vautour, who did not attend college himself, started working at the age of 14 and felt very passionate about his children getting college degrees. While Vautour makes about $60,000 per year, it was not enough to send his children to the private school.

“It gave me a reason to be here,” Vautour explained. “I used to joke with the vice president that I’d actually work for nothing because my kids are here because of that perk. I could care less if they even gave me a raise because my kids came here.”

Knowing that free tuition and an excellent education was in reach motivated Vautour’s children to work hard in order to get accepted into the prestigious school.

“When I started working at BC my oldest daughter was 13 or 14,” Vautour said. “She decided she wanted to go to school there and that pushed her. She really studied as hard as she could.”

His youngest daughter graduated from BC earlier this year, becoming Vautour’s fifth child to earn a degree from Boston College.

“It feels great but it’s kind of bittersweet,” Vautour says. “My oldest daughter started here in 1998 and now it’s 2016 and my last one is graduating. In that much time I’ve always had a kid at BC.”

Vautour plans on working for the school even after his youngest daughter graduates.

“I love it,” he explains. “Working here makes me feel young.”
