This Homeless Man Returned a Woman’s Purse Intact, and She Changed His Life
When Daisy Owen lost her purse after a night out with friends, she thought her money, iPhone, ID, and other valuables were gone forever.
“I lost my bag at the weekend which had my iPhone 6s+, my purse, keys and provisional [ID] and I have been absolutely heartbroken,” she later explained.
However, what she didn’t count on was the kindness of homeless man Paul Calderbank. Daisy Owen recounted what he did for her, writing on a GoFundMe page set up to help Calderbank, “This man has been above and beyond and found my bag Saturday morning and spent TWO DAYS walking around asking and trying to find me, and was just on his way to my home address to try and return my bag to me personally! He was terrified of letting any of the other homeless people in Bolton know he had found this bag, or the police seeing him with it in case he was accused of stealing so he has spent the weekend walking around with this letter so he didn’t get in trouble.”
The note of explanation Calderbank carried with him read in part, “I want to locate the true owner and personally hand all her belongings back to her because I am [an] honest person now. Because to me it feels so good to do the right thing, and there is money in purse and I have not taken a penny.”
Moved by Calderbank’s act of kindness, Daisy Owen decided to do something for him. She launched a GoFundMe campaign aimed at getting him off the streets. As of Oct. 16, the campaign has raised £3,496 ($4630.45 USD), well over the original £2,700 ($3576.15 USD) goal.
“I am so grateful and so happy that there are people like this in the world. He is homeless and currently living in a hostel yet still didn’t take A PENNY out of it,” Daisy Owen wrote on the GoFundMe. “There [need] to be more people like this in the world. WE NEED TO GET THIS MAN OFF THE STREETS!”
