Shade comes in all shapes and sizes. As much as we might desire natural shade on those hot summer days, most of the time we do not like what comes with it: leaves, debris, pollen, and hanging bugs.

So, we create it ourselves, and there’s way more than one way to do so. Don’t think you have to resort to the same old, tired awning, or build a screened-in porch.

Umbrellas don’t have to be tacky. They can be modern and uplifting like the one seen above. Having the pole not in the center, makes it feel more roomy and contemporary.

There’s no better way to create shade than by hanging a pool towel or a sheet over some chairs and calling it a day. The kids will love it and it’s easy to take down or move around.

This patio gets good protection from its arched canopy. If you’re tired of usual awnings or umbrellas, this shape gives you some unique architecture and serves as a focal point in your backyard.

This plant is called the hardy banana. If you need some more greenery as well as shade, consider this plant. It can grow up to two feet per week and eventually reach 12 to 18 feet tall.
