Meet Rachel Teufel, an award-winning cake designer who is redesigning the typical wedding cake.

Teufel is taking the traditional wedding cake and adding an incredible amount of artistic design to it by creating cakes that look like gorgeous rock formations. Together she combines “the earthly beauty found in dazzling amethyst crystal formations and the pristine elegance of the traditional white wedding cake,” shared APlus.

A few different angles to show off the depth of this sugar amethyst geode cake I created for the launch of @firstlookco and @mossdenver Fabulous party last night!!!

Teufel uses rock candy sugar and gold leafing to imitate the crystal-like structures found in different volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Using these techniques, she is able to create amazing and eye-popping decorations that border between fantasy and reality.

I think this is my new favorite cake… Sugar amethyst geode with gold and silver leaf. Created for the @firstlookco launch party celebration this evening. Great job Brynn, @gabbytheangel and @amberfairbanks

Teufel’s cake first took off after she posted a video of the creation to her Facebook page. The video was quick to go viral, growing her page to 65K followers and inspiring a new trend in the baking world.

The cakes take about 16-hours to make and that doesn’t include any of the planning before hand.

“I was given several pieces of inspiration to draw ideas from, including actual geodes, a beautiful illustration and a variety of table decor items like plates, chargers and geometric floral arrangements,” Teufel explained to The Huffington Post. “I knew I wanted to create a show-stopping cake and use the geode as the focal point, creating an awe-inspiring visual experience for the guests.”
