Helen Mirren Warns U.S. Voters Over Donald Trump, Ted Cruz
Dame Helen Mirren fears America will be destroyed as a “great country” if Republican hopefuls Donald Trump or Ted Cruz win the presidential election.
Both men are in the running to be named the party’s official candidate for the 2016 ballot, but Trump has sparked controversy around the world with his proposals to tackle immigration in the U.S.
His campaign suffered a huge blow this week when he was defeated by Cruz in the Iowa caucus, which many believe signals the beginning of the end for his presidential ambitions.
However, Mirren is not so pleased with the result as Trump’s opponents are, because she fears Cruz is an even more extreme candidate and could damage the U.S. beyond repair.
She told Britain’s Channel 4 News, “I think the people who support Ted Cruz think Donald Trump is a little bit of a liberal. I think Donald Trump has a populist voice, massively populist, and that sort of slightly demagogue populist voice, but I think Ted Cruz is more of the really old school extreme right conservative… All it’s about, it seems to me, is how much everybody loves him (Trump)… I think that there is an extraordinary, extreme right-wing voice in America. Extreme. And if that does get into power fully – in the Congress, in the Senate, in the White House – and has all the power that it wants, I can’t imagine how the world would look. I think it’s a very, very frightening idea myself. And this whole idea of making America great – it seems to me that it would actually sort of be the end of America as a great country.”
