A police officer in Belarus is being hailed as a hero after shielding a young child from being struck by a car on Wednesday.
Junior police officer Sergey Batalko was walking behind the boy on a pedestrian sidewalk, when a man driving a mini van lost control of his car on a tram road. As the car careened out of control, Baltalko dragged the child out of harm’s way and shielded him with his own body as the car barreled into them.
The unidentified boy was not injured while Batalko only suffered a shin injury. Witnesses of the accident offered to help the injured officer and called traffic police.
According to Belarus Interior Ministry, there was a pedestrian sign near the scene of the accident and more than likely the driver did not yield.
The driver, 59, failed to explain to officers why he violated traffic regulations. He is expected to be fined up to 6,300,000 Belarusian rubles ($300) and have his driver’s license suspended for two years.
The whole accident was recorded on a dashboard camera. Watch the harrowing scene below.
