Sometimes, there is no greater bond of friendship than the relationship between a human and a cat — especially if they are sledding together.
Washington-based photographer Jesse Smith, 29, frequently lets both of his cats, Weston and Ellinore, enjoy the great outdoors. Along with his wife, Ashley, the pair filmed Smith going downhill on a sled with Weston on his shoulder.
“The inspiration of the sledding cat came from my wife, Ashley, and my own desire to take our cats on all of our adventures,” Smith wrote to Your Daily Dish. “We’ve been sledding once before, and when we had some new fresh snow come down, we took advantage of it and naturally, the cats came with us. “
Smith sees their outdoor adventures as an opportunity for their cats to socialize.
“There’s typically a warm up period when we take them out,” Smith told Washington television station KCPQ. “But they’re really good. They just lead and we follow.”
The 33-second video of Smith sledding with Weston was posted on January 13.
“Here we go, Weston,” Smith said in the video as they were sledding down the hill together. “Let’s hope we don’t wipeout, buddy. Hang on, man. Picking up speed.”
As of January 19, the video received over 2 million views.
“We have been completely blown away at how quickly this video exploded,” Smith told Your Daily Dish. “We’re both happy that this short, 33-second cell phone video could bring joy and bewilderment to a large number of people.”
Smith also said that the wellbeing of the cats is always a priority for them when they are out.
“We’re always a very short distance from the comfort of a warm car, and take frequent breaks. Also, both of our adventure cats have their own coats for added protection from the elements,” Jesse Smith told Paw Culture. “During those long hikes in the snow, we’ve trained them to get comfortable in our backpacks, where there’s always a warm blanket on top to curl up in.”
