In his lead up to hosting the Tony Awards this Sunday, James Corden took some of Broadway’s biggest stars for a ride in the latest version of Carpool Karaoke.
Mr. Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, joined Corden on his quest to navigate the New York City streets during Corden’s attempt to find the Beacon Theater. Miranda was quick to get a Hamilton reference in right away sharing, “I’m at your service, sir,” right before the duo began rapping Hamilton’s opening number, “Guns and Ships.”
After the opening number, the duo decided to make the ride a real carpool and pick up Audra McDonald (Shuffle Along), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Fully Committed), and Jane Krakowski (She Loves Me). Corden hit play on the Broadway classic “Seasons of Love” from Rent, causing everyone in the car to let out a collective “awww.”
“The most Broadway response to hearing an opening chord,” Corden shared.
While the crew was not singing, Corden asked for advice about his hosting duties for the show. Ferguson and McDonald agreed that everyone just wants to have fun so keep the show light and the stars at ease.
After the little advice session, the group joined forces to sing, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” from Jersey Boys. For the finale, the crew belted out “One Day More,” from Les Miserables. The Broadway stars went all out for this number, giving everyone an opportunity for a solo and let McDonald finish it off with an out of this world high note.
