Marvel Announces ‘Ant-Man’ Sequel And Three New Mystery Films
Ahead of New York Comic Con 2015, Marvel Entertainment announced a sequel to the Paul Rudd-helmed Ant-Man, as well as three new, unnamed films to hit theaters in 2020.
In a press release early Thursday, Marvel announced Ant-Man and the Wasp will be hitting theaters on July 6, 2018. The film will see the return of Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Rudd) teaming up with Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) as the Wasp, the hero teased at the end of this summer’s blockbuster.
From Marvel:
“Following our hero’s debut adventure in this summer’s Ant-Man, Scott Lang will return alongside Hope Van Dyne on July 6, 2018 with Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. The sequel will mark the first Marvel Studios film named after its heroine.
“Additionally, Ant-Man’s second adventure will lead to a couple of other films shifting their dates, with Marvel’s Black Panther moving up [i.e. release date pushed back] to February 16, 2018 and Marvel’s Captain Marvel landing on March 8, 2019.
“Finally, three untitled Marvel Studios films will premiere on May 1, 2020, July 10, 2020, and November 6, 2020.”
Ant-Man was released to mixed reviews this summer, but the draw that Marvel has on the box office saw the superhero film rise to #9 domestically for 2015 with a total global cume of $409.8M. While critics were less than thrilled with the film, good word-of-mouth from fans helped fuel the movie’s success.
While die-hard fans will surely be happy to see Ant-Man stepping back on to the screen in his own film, they’ll be able to see him sooner than 2018 when he steps into the fray in Captain America: Civil War next spring.
And what are these mystery movies slated for 2020? We’re hoping for some hints from Comic Con this weekend.
