Nina Simone and Sly Stone Land Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Honors
Music icons Nina Simone, Sly Stone, and Lou Reed’s The Velvet Underground are set to be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards by Recording Academy officials.
Jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, gospel singer Shirley Caesar, country legend Charley Pride, and pop star Jimmie Rodgers will also be recognized at the 2017 Grammy Special Merit Awards.
“This year’s Special Merit Awards recipients comprise a prestigious group of diverse and influential creators who have crafted or contributed to some of the most distinctive recordings in music history,” explains Neil Portnow, President and CEO of The Recording Academy. “These exceptionally inspiring figures are being honored as legendary performers, creative architects, and technical visionaries. Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their respective crafts have created a timeless legacy.”
The honorees will be celebrated as part of the pre-Grammy Awards festivities in February.
Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz, Earth, Wind & Fire, Herbie Hancock, Jefferson Airplane, Linda Ronstadt, and Run-D.M.C. made up the Class of 2016.
