For bike riders, this may just be the best news ever.
Non-profit organization the East Coast Greenway Alliance is working to complete a 3,000-mile bike trail that would span from Key West, Florida to Canada, with smaller routes connecting to other sites along the way.
Don’t expect to complete the trip in one day, of course.
The project began in 1991, and since then, has attracted major support and donations. As of now, 30% of the existing route is off-road, protecting bike riders from collisions with cars. Eventually, the organization hopes to have the entire route consist of off-road trails.
The trail consists of a “spine route,” fully mapped in 2008, which will feed into smaller routes nearby, linking major towns and attractions together. Although the trail was originally envisioned with bicyclists in mind, the idea has expanded to allow runners, hikers, and even the wheelchair-bound to also enjoy the route.
While the goal is to make the trail off-road, the ECG does hope that the routes will be “mostly paved,” allowing for easy use. Anyone looking to donate can do so through the ECG’s website.
