Following the wild popularity of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher character in Marvel’s Daredevil season 2, the online streaming service announced on Friday that a standalone The Punisher series is coming.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the publisher “has learned that Marvel has ordered a spin-off starring [the] vigilante character introduced in Daredevil season 2.”
EW reported that Jon Bernthal will reprise the role of Frank castle, a military veteran who fights crime in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen through a no-nonsense, lethal style of crimefighting.
Netflix’s The Punisher will be helmed by Steve Lightfoot, the executive producer from fan-favorite and critically-acclaimed Hannibal.
The Punisher will be Marvel’s sixth series in production with Netflix. The online streaming service has already run through two seasons of Daredevil and one spin-off show, Jessica Jones. In the fall, Luke Cage will debut and next year will see the premiere of Iron Fist. All four of these lead characters will come together for a team-up series, The Defenders. It’s unclear if the Punisher will play a part in the Defenders team now.
Marvel and Netflix are expected to officially announce The Punisher series later on Friday. Below is the first official image from the series unveiled by Entertainment Weekly.
Update: Netflix released an official teaser trailer late Friday morning.
