Radiohead Fans Rejoice as First Single ‘Burn the Witch’ Debuts Ahead of New Album

After days of strange teasers and an even stranger move to ostensibly delete themselves from the internet, famed U.K. band Radiohead have released the first single from their upcoming ninth studio album.

“Burn the Witch” was released late Tuesday morning after several Instagram teasers showed up on the band’s official page. The song is accompanied by a stop-motion video, directed by Chris Hopewell and produced by Jacknife, according to Pitchfork.

“Burn the Witch” is the lead single from Radiohead’s forthcoming unnamed ninth album, which has no official release date as of press time. According to Pitchfork, the song has been around since the band’s Kid A sessions at the turn of the century.

As NPR puts it:

“This version is grounded in strings strongly evoking [Jonny] Greenwood’s tributes to the Polish composer Krzysktof Penderecki, but with the pop emotionalism of his film-score work. Radiohead’s other members add heft to the steady crescendo that builds to some trademark [Thom] Yorke falsetto rhapsodizing.”

“Burn the Witch” is available now to stream on Spotify and Tidal, according to Pitchfork, and is available for download from iTunes.

The band has made headlines over the past 48 hours as they seemingly attempted to erase themselves from the internet, deleting their website and social media accounts, in what was thought a protest of streaming services like Spotify.

Though no release date for the new album has been announced, the band begins a 18-stop world tour on May 20.
