23-year-old Shelly Cawley and her husband James were eagerly expecting the arrival of their first child, Rylan. Sadly, giving birth is not so simple and Shelly and James’ experience quickly went from joy to terror.

Right as baby Rylan was born, Shelly developed a serious blood clot that ended up causing her arteries to clog. In a moment usually associated with happiness and excitement, new mother Shelly tragically passed away right in the hospital room. Doctors pronounced her dead. There was nothing they could do to bring her back.

But the baby still needed nourishment. In a desperate attempt to help the healthy but now motherless newborn, the doctors decided to place Rylan on Shelly’s breast to see if the baby could get a little of her dead mother’s milk. What happened next was both shocking and wonderful.

The skin-to-skin contact between Rylan and her mother miraculously revived Shelly. Are maternal instincts stronger than even our modern medical advancements? The doctors were stumped. Could this have been divine intervention or maybe a mother’s will to live to see her child grow? It’s a question likely never to be answered, but continues to show the boundless capabilities of the human spirit.

Now one year later, Rylan celebrates her first birthday with her healthy and happy family.

It seems that maybe love can conquer all… even death.
