For many police officers, most days on the job consist of routine traffic stops, but when one cop came upon a terrifying scene, his quick thinking and training kicked in. Now, he’s being hailed a hero.
When authorities responded to a 911 call from a woman who said she was trapped inside her burning car, Officer Tim Schwering was the first to arrive on scene. According to reports, Schwering acted quickly, running up to the car and breaking the driver’s side window with his baton. When the Spokane cop failed to unlock the door, Schwering removed the entire window and proceeded to pull the woman out through the window with the help of a neighbor.
Fire officials said the entire engine had caught fire and melted away the grill and bumper by time they arrived on scene, according to CBS affiliate KREM.
Officer Schwering was treated for symptoms of smoke inhalation and has been released from the hospital, according to KREM.
KREM reported the driver of the vehicle was treated and released at the scene with no injuries.
It’s likely that if not for Officer Schwering’s quick acting, the situation could have ended much much worse.
