South African big game hunter Theunis Botha was crushed to death by an elephant he was hunting during a recent expedition, according to news outlets in the African nation.

The tragic moment happened after a hunting expedition came upon a herd of breeding elephants at a game reserve in Hwange National Park. According to IndyStar, the herd charged the hunters, who opened fire on the animals. Botha, leader of the expedition — who ran Theunis Botha Big Game Safaris — was reportedly crushed to death after one of the elephants lifted Botha with its trunk as other hunters shot the animal. The elephant collapsed and landed directly on Botha.

According to the website for Big Game Safaris, Botha “perfected leopard and lion hunting safaris with hounds in Africa,” IndyStar reported.

Botha was also known for European-style “Monteira hunts,” which use hounds to lure animals toward a group of hunters.

It is a tragic story for both the animal and the man’s family. It’s almost as if karma came instantly back to haunt the man. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
