For a majority of parents giving birth to children on December 31, it’s a matter of seconds between their child being born in the expiring year or being a “new year’s baby.” However several sets of parents who gave birth to twins this past New Year’s Eve ended up with children of both vintage, with one child being born prior to midnight in 2016, and the other after 2017 began.
One such family were the Shays of Glendale, Arizona. Holly Shay gave birth to Sawyer Matthew at 11:51 p.m. on December 31, and his brother Everett Jackson 10 minutes later at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2017. Holly and husband Brandon Shay were both over the moon with their healthy children, and they even cracked jokes about a potential sibling rivalry.
“I think Sawyer might give his brother a hard time,” Holly told Arizona television station KNXV. New dad Brandon added “I think it’s going to mostly be Sawyer teasing Everett over him being the eldest.”

Over in Arlington Texas, another family also saw twins born in two different years. First, J’aiden Alexander was born at 11:46 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, while his brother Jordan Xavier arrived 26 minutes later, at 12:12 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2017. The latter was also the first baby born at Medical City Arlington hospital in the new year, and the boys — though born healthy — were a month early.
“I definitely was not expecting to spend the holiday, but I am glad they’re here and healthy,” mother Cassandra Martinez told Dallas Forth Worth television station KTVT.
There was also an unprecedented third set of twins born in separate years, this time in San Diego. San Diego television station KNSD reports that the pair of girls were born at 11:56 p.m and 12:00 a.m. respectively according to the Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns. Their family declined to speak to the media, or release any personal information about themselves or their new children.
