You can call him Pooh the Bionic Cat thanks to his new prosthetic legs.
According to the Associated Press, veterinary surgeon Dr. Vladislav Zlatinov performed a delicate procedure on the cat, who goes by Pooh, a few months ago. The black and white beauty had lost both of his back legs after being hit by a train.
The operation had been performed several times in the U.K., but Dr. Zlatinov was the first to attempt it in Eastern Europe. In fact, due to limited access to resources from previously conducted surgeries, the surgeon had to design and build his own. He designed a pair of titanium legs that were implanted into Pooh’s body — which in turn connected to interchangeable external prosthetic legs.
After Pooh went through a six week recovery period, he was able to successfully start using the limbs. He’s even back to playing outside and cleaning himself. Thanks to the surgery’s success, Dr. Zlatinov has since operated on three more cats, with several cats more on the waiting list to get prosthetic legs in the future.
Vladislav Zlatinov reflected on the surgery, saying “We’re very proud. It was quite a success… It gives hope to other patients.”
