Zayn Malik has released his first solo recording and music video since leaving One Direction.
The former One Direction singer’s single, “Pillowtalk,” dropped at midnight Thursday night, a truly ideal time for some pillow talk. The single is part of Malik’s highly anticipated debut solo album, Mind of Mine. Malik teased the video early on Thursday, asking on Twitter: “So who’s staying up with me tonight for this single and video?”

The very futuristic and CGI heavy video stars his current girlfriend and model Gigi Hadid. Bouha Kazmi, who has directed music videos for Jay Z and Dum Dum Girls, helped to create Zayn’s vision for the slick R&B hit. Malik and Hadid are seen making out and being very seductive in-between the visual effects and color distortion.
Earlier this week, Zayn sat down with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe for his first on-camera interview since he left One Direction. He spoke about why he chose to leave the band and how he never really wanted to be there from the start.
“I always wanted to go, from the first year really,” Malik bluntly admitted “I never really wanted to be in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time.”
During an interview with the Sunday Times Culture magazine, the 23-year-old singer shared the context for the song is “pretty black and white,” explaining it’s about sex.
“Everybody has sex, and it’s something people wanna hear about. It’s part of everybody’s life, a very big part of life,” Malik shared with the British magazine.
“Pillowtalk” is now available to buy on iTunes. Malik’s debut album Mind of Mine will be released on March 25, coincidentally on the one-year anniversary of Malik quitting One Direction. Check out the video below!
