On Wednesday night, the Chicago Cubs finally put a more-than a century old curse behind them after defeating the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in Game 7 of the World Series. The game will go down as an instant classic, not only because both the Cubs and Indians were looking to end decade’s old championship droughts, but also that the home field Indians made a stunning comeback late in the game.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Cubs reliever Aroldis Chapman gave up three runs, including a two-run home run from Rajai Davis that knotted the contest at six apiece. When no runs were scored in the ninth, Game 7 went into extra innings where the tension reached fever pitch when a shower passed over the stadium causing a 20-minute rain delay. After play resumed, in the 10th, Ben Zobrist drove in the go-ahead double and the Cubs’ Mike Montgomery did enough in the bottom of the inning to hold Cleveland to one run and a world title.
The Cubs are just the sixth team in World Series history to comeback from a 3-1 series deficit, the first to do it since the 1985 Kansas City Royals.
