The brand new trailer for Loving couldn’t come at a better moment.

Based on Nancy Birski’s HBO documentary The Loving Story, Loving shares the story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga) and how they broke the law in the 1960s by simply getting married.

The film follows the interracial couple as they fight for their rights for a basic marriage. After being sentenced to a year in prison for their interracial relationship, they go on to fight for their rights in the Supreme Court.

The official film synopsis reads:

“From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, “Loving” celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, “Loving v. Virginia,” went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since.”

Director Jeff Nichols knew this would be an important film to make given the characters and their surroundings.

“It’s obviously a film that has political significance and social significance,” Nichols told Entertainment Weekly. “But these two people were completely apolitical. And that’s something that drew me to the story. Who am I to talk about racial politics in the 1960s — but I can talk about two people who love each other.”

Loving was a huge success when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this past May and is expected to pick up a lot of buzz come awards season. Check out the film in theaters on November 4 and see the trailer below.
