Summer flew by and now it’s time to start preparing your farewell to the sunshine and the warm weather. As you’re changing your wardrobe for fall, your garden needs to prepare for the cold months of autumn ahead.

Get in the festive fall spirit by planting autumn plants such as pansies, kale, or asters. The biggest misconception of fall is that gardening is over; that’s not true whatsoever. There are a variety of plants that continue to grow successfully throughout the colder months. Row covers and cold frames can also assist in extending your growing period of crops.

Your home needs cleaning and your garden is no different! Clean out weeds and plant debris from the summer. Get rid of lingering plants or flowers that you know won’t last through the fall and winter months.

Put your garden to bed by digging up sensitive plants and removing them from the soil. If you have some plants you want to continue growing indoors, create available space and transfer them to an area that contains lots of sunlight. Planting a cover crop on top of your vegetable garden can act as an extra layer of protection to your crops.
