Boyfriend’s Proposal Is the First Thing Deaf Woman Hears After Receiving Cochlear Implant

A truly breathtaking moment went viral this past week.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center posted a video of a young woman, Andrea Diaz, who’d just received a cochlear implant, a device that allows disabled people to hear by bypassing damaged parts of the ear and stimulating auditory nerves to send sounds directly to the brain. The woman excitedly reacts to hearing both her own and her mother’s voices for the first time, but it’s when her boyfriend finally speaks that she is truly surprised.

After he asks if she can hear him, the man drops down to one knee and pulls out an engagement ring.

“I wanted to make one of the first things that you hear, because I love you so much, and you’re my best friend baby. I wanted to make the first thing that you hear is me asking you to marry me,” says the man in the video.

The woman excitedly says yes, and the two embrace.

The heartwarming video had been viewed over 100,000 times and began to go viral when the university pulled the video down from their Facebook page and erased all references to the couple’s names, citing their desire for privacy.

While the video’s viral popularity was curtailed, it was briefly able to spread the potential benefits of using cochlear implants.

Over 58,000 people in the United States use the devices to help them overcome hearing difficulties.
