Supermarket Commercial May Be Most Powerful Christmas Ad Ever Created

Each year companies compete for the attention of consumers during the busy holiday season, but this EDEKA Christmas commercial is taking heartwrenching advertising to new heights.

EDEKA is the largest supermarket chain in Germany. Their Christmas spot centers on family and togetherness in a rollercoaster of emotions.

The EDEKA Christmas commercial starts with an elderly man standing at his window as a message plays on his answering machine. The voice is his daughter, who says they can’t make it for Christmas this year. The man’s grandchild shouts in the background, “Merry Christmas!” As the message plays, the elderly man watches his neighbor’s family come home for the holidays.

The advertisement then cuts to the man sitting and eating alone meal after meal before cutting to his children, who all receive the devastating news: Their father has passed away.

We’re shown the family as they all make their way to their father’s home, with the gut-wrenching song “Dad” by Supreme Music playing in the background.

With tears in their eyes and the feeling of guilt overcoming them, the family arrives at the home to discover a dinner table set and candles aglow. Shocked and confused, they turn to discover their father standing there.

“How else could I have brought you all together?” he asks, according to a translation from USA Today.

The heartwarming ad cuts to the family enjoying their holiday together, laughing and cheering as the words “Zeit heimzukommen” appear on the screen.

“Time to come home.”
