Fighting a ticket in traffic court doesn’t have the reputation for being fun. Usually, it’s a long, drawn-out process that in end does nothing but waste the time of all those involved. However, a recent hearing a Providence, Rhode Island courtroom left the defendant, prosecutor, and judge all laughing uproariously.
The courtroom exchange, posted on YouTube by the television show Caught in Providence, begins with Judge Frank Caprio addressing a defendant only identified as Sarah. The judge begins seriously reading off the charge against her, which involved parking too early on a street that only allows parking beginning at 10:00 a.m.
However, the judge’s attitude quickly changes once he reads the actual time on the ticket.
“The ticket was issued at 9:59 a.m. — and 58 seconds. And you can’t park there until 10 o’clock,” he says through laughter.
He jokingly asks Sarah, who’s also started giggling, to explain herself. She responds that her car clock read 10:00 a.m.
The judge jokingly retorts, “So now you’re blaming this car clock? What does justice demand in this case, is this jail?”
After a bit more comical back and forth that even brings the court inspector into things at one point, Judge Frank Caprio dismisses the charges, ending the video with, “I think 9:59 a.m. is close enough to 10:00 a.m., matter is dismissed.”
