After Thursday’s huge announcement confirming scientists have found gravitational waves in the universe – a theory first proposed by Albert Einstein more than 100 years ago – researchers believe the discovery has likely opened the door to new understanding and exploration in the universe.
With that in mind, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology has unveiled a series of posters that takes viewers out of our world and into a whole new frontier within our solar system and beyond.
The series, titled “Visions of the Future,” imagines what space travel may look like in the future, where humans travel from planet to planet, instead of just continent to continent.
From NASA:
“Imagination is our window into the future. At NASA/JPL we strive to be bold in advancing the edge of possibility so that someday, with the help of new generations of innovators and explorers, these visions of the future can become a reality. As you look through these images of imaginative travel destinations, remember that you can be an architect of the future.”
The series’ retro style highlights some of our solar system’s most notable planets, like a visit to Jupiter on a hot air balloon and the potential for Mars colonies, or even visiting Saturn’s largest moon, Titan.
But the series explores other stars and exo-planets discovered in recent years, distant stars that may be able to harbor human life outside of Earth.
Will the confirmation of Einstein’s theory help get us there? Thanks to the discovery, these destinations no longer seem so impossibly out of reach.
Take a look at the amazing posters below. You can download full-size images from the JPL website.
