Lionsgate Films has finally released a new Power Rangers reboot trailer for fans to see.
The first teaser trailer for the film debuted during last year’s edition of New York Comic Con, and downplayed the franchise’s colorful heroics, opting instead for a dark, angsty tone and characters. That, combined with the film’s take on the iconic costumes and interesting casting choices left longtime fans of the property concerned that the new film would drift too far from the show’s roots. The new trailer seems to be designed to counteract that thought process.
The first half of the trailer focuses on the five Power Rangers bonding together over their power coins, and being introduced to their mentor Zordon (Bryan Cranston) and his robot assistant Alpha 5 (Bill Hader), both of whom were noticeably absent in the teaser. While the teens are still presented as modern, the heavy angst present in the first released footage is replaced by a heavy dose of comedy that seems to embrace the built-in absurdity of the concept without becoming parody.
The second half of the Power Rangers reboot trailer amps up the action, delivering our first look at their suits in action. In addition, villains Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) and Goldar, as well as their robotic zords are given screen time. These elements, missing entirely from the initial teaser, seem to indicate that the film will be much closer to the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series than many thought.
Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, in addition to Banks, Cranston, and Hader. The film, directed by Dean Israelite, is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.
