Many things have been accidentally left behind at airports. In the case of a 3-month-old Chihuahua named Chewy, his abandonment at a Las Vegas airport was deliberate and meant to save him.

His owner left the puppy behind in a bathroom at McCarran International Airport with a note attached to his head. The note detailed the tale of domestic abuse and the owner’s rush to escape her abuser.

The note read, “Hi, I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart but she has. NO other option. My boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a Big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooooo much please love and take care of him. Xoxoxoxo.”

Luckily, Chewy was found by airport security and taken to nearby Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue (CMDR). They immediately took the abandoned puppy into their care.

“He is doing just great growing every day like a normal puppy,” Darlene Blair, Admin at CMDR, told Your Daily Dish.

Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue published a Facebook post on July 5 with a personal plea from the abandoned puppy to adopt him.

The post was met with an overwhelming response to adopt him. However, due to Chewy’s unique circumstances alleging abuse, CMDR is taking greater care in his adoption.

“Since we do not know any details regarding the people involved in the abuse situation, our vetting process will be even more intense and take longer than normal.”Blair told Your Daily Dish. “Firstly they must live in the Las Vegas area, we do not do out of state or country adoptions. Secondly the adopters must understand that theirs and Chewy’s identity must be kept secret for all of their protection. That is one reason we are waiting for at least three or four weeks to actually finalize the adoption. Hopefully that amount of time will help keep them safe.”

No action has been taken to locate Chewy’s owner. CMDR believes that the owner wants to remain anonymous for her own safety.

“We are not going to do anything overt to find her either. She is in hiding for a reason and we will not do anything to draw her out and thus cause her harm in any way. Abusers go to great lengths to find their victims and that is not something we want to be any part of,” Blair explained to Your Daily Dish.

Chewy was the first puppy that came to CMDR where the owner left a note — but unfortunately, being left behind in an abusive environment is all too common.

“He is one of thousands like him who are left behind when a woman has to leave an abusive environment. There is not enough resources to help DV (domestic violence) victims with pets, let alone those without pets. This woman is in hiding probably for the rest of her life because there was no help. Chewy is just one of many who needs to find a new home because of a bad situation,” Blair told Your Daily Dish.

Since 2016, Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue has made it their mission  to “seek out and accept the senior and special needs dogs that have no hope and give them a destiny.”

Hopefully, Chewy the abandoned puppy will find his destiny soon.
